I got my new tank today as my gerbils were in a three storey cage but today i bought a tank for them with my christmas money from my mum and dad. The only problem is that my male and female were seperated so they dont have babies but they are together again now as i dont have the right divider for them. Does anyone know how many littres are in one gallon im pretty sure its bogger than 10 gallons. It cost me 27 pounds without a lid. There seems to be loads of room im sure theres enough room for at least 4 gerbies. I a,m so excited i can see my babies alot better than when they were in there cage and its alot cleaner in my bedroom lol

Congratulations! I'm not so good with gallons, but look here: www.maisel.de/~eva/cagesizes.html. I see that 10 gallon (US) is about 38 litres. And that is 8 UK gallons (I see you're from England).

congrats. They should be much happier in the tank instead of the cage. Make sure to fill it with lots of shavings, cardboard and toys. ;D

Congratulations on your new tank. It is a lot cleaner and a much better view. My gerbils are much happier now that they are in tanks instead of cages. I am sure yours are too . You asked how many gerbils? It is acceptable to have 5 gal for every gerbil. If you have 4, then you need a 20 gal tank. I am not sure of the conversion. I think it is also important to let you know that your gerbils will continue to have babies unless you neuter the male or you separate them. I am currently split caging my mating pair so they don't keep having babies. I have had 2 liters in 3 months. If you still have the cages, you could put the males in the cages. Then you could be sure to prevent more pups. If you have homes for them it would be okay, but if you don't it may be bad for the pups since you have limited space for them.

I really don't think the 5 gallons per gerbil is acurate. I have 3 in a 10 gallon and they are fine.

im pretty sure the tank is a 20 gallon. I can see them so much better now but the female gerbil tries really hard to escape does this mean she doesnt like it? I have no longer got the old cage as it was all chewed up anyway and they had chewed the clips so the bottom fals off if i move it. ;D I am sure i have definate homes for 20 pups so im not panicking just yet. thanx for all yyour advice pixytwinkle

Hey Pixy, I am pleased to hear you have homed 20 already. They are such loveable creatures. Hey Ryan, Yes optimal / acceptable conditions are 5 gallons of space per gerbil. If what you have is working, then it works. I am sure you let them out enough and give them enough play time that the space is not an issue.

I really don't think the 5 gallons per gerbil is acurate. I have 3 in a 10 gallon and they are fine. I agree. I have 5 females in a 10 gallon tank. Well they really have 2 10gallons side by side, but they spend the majority of time in only 1 tank. 7 in a 30 gallon, and there is more than enough room for all of them.
