Is it alright to use pine wood to make a toy for my gerbils, as long as it's untreated? Or does it still give off a bad chemical like in the bedding??

I would say Don't use it, There are lots of reports of Pine having bad stuff in it for Gerbils and Gerbils are very sensative to it, You can alway's get good Aspen to make a toy out of or something, Good luck!

If its untreated, its probably fine. Try it if you want, it won't kill them. If you notice any puffy fur or clickly noises just remove it and they'll be fine.
The problem with Pine and Cedar beddings is the way its proccessed. So if the wood isn't treated.. shouldn't be a problem. Most wooden houses in petshops are made out of pine anyway and nobody ever complains about those.
If you got the wood from a hardware store, you probably could get Aspen or something anyway ...

I agree with J. It is the treatment process and the heavy oils that cause injury to the gerbils. Gerbils can be affected both outwardly (respiratory) or inwardly (kidney issues).
To be safe, you could go get some aspen. I used a pine 2X4 for a ramp. Once I noticed them chewing on it, I took it out to be safe.
Hope this has helped.

I ahve made several houses out of pine wood and they just love it! I don't think pine is a problem at all. They would sleep in there and then they would chew on it. I think pine is okay for gerbils as long as it isn't in the bedding.

That is wath I think too, fine as toys, but not as bedding! But what about the resin (I'm not totally sure if this is the right English word for it)? Is it not sticky?
