I had posted this question on the previous forum. In fact, I was notified that a reply had been posted, but I never got a chance to read it before the forum was suddenly shut down! But anyhow, I was simply wondering if vitamin drops (usually placed in the water supply) were necessary. I have it on good authority that are not. I also have it on good authority they are. Could someone please tip the scales? Thanks.

Great to have you back Sanya!! ;D No, vitamin drops are not necessary if you feed your gerbils a good quality food! Normally they add some extra vitamins and minerals into a complete gerbil food (or hamster, rat, etc.)! So extra vitamin drops are not necessary! But vitamins are perishable! So if you store the food for a long time, they may not work anymore! I'm not sure, but I thought for about 3 months or something! Extra vitamins can also be given by vegetables and fruit, but be careful with that, because the high content of water in it can cause a metabolic disorder, their intestines are not used to moisty food! They can get than diarrhoea! So if you want to give them some fruit and vegetables, than not too much and too often and use fruit with a low content of water! And I have to say not all gerbils like fruit! Vitamin drops can be useful, when you have weak, sick, pregnant gerbils! Than they can use some extra vitamins! I personally don't use any extra vitamins for my gerbils!
