At a temple in Bikaner, India, rats are considered sacred. Worshippers come to feed them, nettings are set up to protect the rats from birds, and they run freely and fearlessly among human visitors.
Excerpt: "They swarm up the pinnacles and burrow beneath the mattresses on which the priests who guard them sleep. Bearded holy men sit beside brass trays loaded with grain and share food with the rats which run in swarms over their shoulders and hide beneath their beards."
I believe this temple was featured in an episode of an American Reality-TV show "The Amazing Race". Contestants had to enter the temple (full of running rats) to find a clue!

Cool... I bet the food tastes a bit Ratty! Don't the guards mind that they have little rat heads poking up under the pillow all the time? I would !
