We have 2 mongolian gerbils and they live in a tank but they have had about 5 water bottles but they always manage to get them off and destroy them!! What is the best way to attach a water bottle to an aquarium tank!?

What type of water bottles have you used? Personally I use this "Lixit" brand bottle. As the bottom and top parts are dome-shaped, my gerbils don't climb on it at all. It simply hangs by the edge of the tank using a bendable wire. I have been using this bottle with no problems. Maybe others can share what bottles they use too!

cool the one we use is similar how ever its not rounded at the top or bottom... The last one they bit thru the plastic mounting and then proceded to chew the length of the bottle and only HALF of the bottle was left..... so they can truley shred anything.... thank god they havent escaped! i can see them quite hapilly munching on my network cables - hehe, could u post an image of the said water bottle on ure cage so i can see how to mount the bottle?

Here is an illustration taken from the back of the packaging. The wire comes with the bottle, of course. It simply hangs by the edge of the tank using the wire.

Almost all of my gerbils like to chew through their water bottles. Some of my gerbils are in plastic tanks - so I just drilled a hole in the tank that was large enough to insert the tip of the water bottle through. That has worked really well for me. For my glass tanks, I use a soup can with a hole punched in it for the water bottle tip. You just have to make sure that the bottle stays perfectly upright, otherwise the water will not come out (I tape the bottle in place). You may need to cover the top of the bottle with a smaller can - one of my gerbils will still jump in the soup can and gnaw the base of the bottle if I don't completely cover the entire bottle with metal. I have attached it to the side of the tank using tape. Another recommendation given to me was to use velcro to affix the bottle to the tank. So far this has worked for my tank of male gerbils. Maybe it would work for you too?

Mine is fairly similar to geikou's water bottle, but I don't have an aquarium. I don't mind cleaning up the mess every once in awhile in exchange for the fresh air that a cage gives...and they like climbing the bars of the cage too, it's funny Depending on how deep your aquarium is, or the levels you may or may not add, you may be able to simply cut a small hole in the top wire mesh covering, and add a "lip" to the top of the water bottle, and let it sit in that way. I have never had problems with a bottle similar to geikou's (except mine is solid blue) in this configuration. Sam
