Queen, are you thinking of millet or milo? I don't have any food packaging handy to check ingredients, but a quick look at several different mixes turned up no millet (unless it's in the man-made pieces), but three out of four contain milo, another spray-type seed that I buy as treats for my gerbils. Instead of having a head of tiny seeds, milo has larger individual reddish seeds about the size of a ball-headed straight pin.
I can get a comparison photo if it would help.

I got whole bunch of different seeds and stuff the other day to make my own gerbil food. When I gave it to them today, they scrambled for the pine nuts. Apparently they're quite a hit.

RW, I'm sure that the food mix I used to buy contained white millet. There are two brands of food that I used to buy, one contains millet and the other did not. The one containing millet also contained red milo, but the gerbs didn't like it as much. The homemade mix I am making now contains both white and red millet.

OK, just checking. I'll try to remember to check the ingredient list the next time I buy food to see whether or not the brand I buy contains millet. I don't think it does, but I might be wrong. RW

I feed my pups millet and they never appear to be high. Unless its the usual frenzied joyful pupness. I do feed my nursing moms almonds, which they love.

k I have no idea what millet is.. What kinds of stores do you people buy this stuff at? And what about nuts like walnuts and almonds? Actually only a couple of my gerbs like walnuts..never tried almonds. Not crazy about peanuts.. um Pistachios? Not sure what those are..but I've seen them in the drug store.. seeds.. So what about seeds out of watermellons, apples.. flaxseed.. any kind of fruit I guess..

Health food stores, that's where we get our seeds and stuff. They have tons of different kinds in bulk and pre bagged. No salt or anything in them, just the natural seeds.

Speaking of nuts, LeGrandePupa did a great job with watching our gerbils. He has made sure he tried every fruit and veggie known to man. He has introduced to them almonds, walnuts, raisins, etc. He now wants to go get the grass seed from our front lawn to try to feed them "natural" seeds. Wow

I think all pistachios are salted, so I wouldn't use them. If they aren't salted, only give them as an occasional treat because they are very high in fat.

Yup our millet is harmless. No high gerbies in Canada. Unless someone is feeding them hemp seeds (certainly not me).
Also just a warning everyone, watch out for old seeds and nuts which are toxic for gerbils...and humans. You can smell the staleness. Lots and LOTS of carcinogens.

Now my gerbils like cucumber seeds, apple seeds, acorns, almonds, walnuts... and um some other raw nuts but I have no idea what they are, just that they like them. ;D
I tried grass and sticks from fruit trees(in my yard, not sprayed)... Eh gnawned on a stick and then they got bored.

Like the kind you usually find in bulk bins at petshops that are infested with mites. The petshops usually just fill them up, they don't dump the old so the old collects on the bottom. Looks all moldy too.
