Gerbils eat around 10g of dry food a day. they need very little water but mayb ecoem very thirsty at times and drink large quantities. I suggest occasionally wieghing the food to reassure yourself, it is actually a very tiny amount and if you place it in a food bowl you may well find your are feedign far more than he can eat.!!! Don't worry, this is very common, in fact I weigh my food into a disposableplastic cup for each colony, then mark the height the food reaches in the cup by drawing a ring around with an idnelible pen (the type used for marking CDs is ideal. Then at feed time each cup is filled to the mark and then my cages fed. I watch what is eaten and can increase or decrease as needed. I can also mark any 'extras' such as Cat food for pregnant/nursing gerbils etc. Not only this a useful reminder me, it saves me money because I am not throwing much food away and it means if I am ill or away I can leave my gerbils in the care of my family knowing their diets are easily taken care of. I have over 20 cages but there is no reason this method cannot be used for just one or two cages as well. I prefer to braodcast food, but it is just as useful for tipping into food bowls. Good luck with your gerbil.
