**Mod Note:Several items on this list are incorrect. Please refer to the guides in the FAQ section. OK Foods NOT OK Foods**I found this list and thought I'd post it for you guys. Most probably already know this but some may not. Safe to feed: - Apple (seedless) - Broccoli - Carrots - Cauliflower leaves and stalks - Cucumber - Lettuce - small amounts occasionally - in excess it can cause liver problems - Parsley - a good tonic - Chickweek - Clover - Dandelion - Yarrow - Biscuits - Boiled Potatoes - Bread (fresh or stale) - Breakfast Cereals (low fat) - Cheese (small amounts occasionally as fattening) - Currents - Dog Biscuits - Egg (scrambled or boiled) - Mealworms - Raisins - Sultanas - Toast Not safe: - Kidney Beans (raw) - Onions - Destroys red blood cells - Shallots - Destroys red blood cells - Potato (raw) - Potato tops - Rhubarb (raw) - Rhubarb leaves - Tomato leaves - Black nightshade - Buttercups - Clematis - Daffodil - Deadly nightshade - Hemlock - Hydrangea - Ivy - Laburnum - Laurel - Oleander - Poinsettia - Rhododendron - Yew - Yucca - Chocolate - Rabbit Mix (containing antibiotic ingredients) - Sweets - Toffee - Avacado - Toxic to their hearts - Garlic* - Coltsfoot *edit* Actually Coltsfoot is very dangerous, DO NOT FEED as it can cause cancer and is hepatoxic (toxic to the kidneys of rodents) *There is much evidence to suggest that garlic can be beneficial to health but there is also some evidence to suggest that an overdose of garlic could be harmful. Therefore although it may not be strictly dangerous to feed to gerbil its effects on gerbils is not completely known. (Editing: Added some items to the do not list) Mod Edit: www.sensi-media.com/gerbil/domestic.htmEddie Cope's page on a domestic gerbil's diet - definately reccomended for reading throughly.

I just had a few things to add: Yeah, garlic, onion, and shallots are bad for small animals. It is an oxidizing agent, and will cause something called hemolyitc anemia in these animals (basically, it destroys some of their red blood cells). Another food on the "do not feed" list should be avacado, because it can be toxic to gerbil (and other animals, most notabley birds) hearts. Just my two cents in this category -Megan

Answer to pretzels is probably the same as my frito question was, just a very small amount not too often. Since they have salt.
Edit: Oh! And you're welcome everyone. ^_^

Berries I don't know.
Plain cherrios I think would be better. Honeynut cheerios might be fattening since it has sugar in them. Maybe just one per gerbil a week?

What about berries? strawberries, blueberries raspberries? I feed mine peices of berries and fruits (when I have them), and my gerbies like it, never had any problems. Just like with any fresh fruit or veggie you want to give it in small amounts, so not to give your gerbil diarrea. I also feed mine Clover, they love it. I only feed fresh stuff where we don't put any chemicals on the lawn.

I'm surprised to hear that kidney beans aren't safe - does anyone know why? Also, what about lentils in general - I thought they were really good for gerbils - don't most mixes have some sort of lentils and also dried peas?
