lab block is a corn-based compressed block-like pelleted feed. they are usually about an inch or so long and a half inch thick and the gerbs knaw at them. They are usually pretty homogenous. I know you can get basic lab block-type food at Wal-Mart, and they are marketed towards rats and mice but they are fine for gerbils. There are two companies that I know make a good staple lab block type diet: Mazuri and Oxbow. There are many others that are fine, but those are two that I would recommend.
