what wood is safe to use with gerbils for the use of gnawing. the wood we have collected is from the beach and is drift wood, we also collected some from the new forest which is weathered pine.
we have taken them out for the time being.
any help would be great

Pine and Cedar = BAD for gerbils due to the oils in them
Though oak is fine for them and any fruit wood, like apples, or pears is fine (though id make sure to ask before you go and hack branches of peoples trees!)

Forgot to say, you need to bake through the wood, so that it kills any bactera that is on the wood, so that they dont get for instance.. Lice that may be in underneath the bark of the wood.
Gorse? whats that..

oooh! i know the stuff never knew what it was called haha! Had some of that cut across my legs on the bikes the other week, nasty thorny stuff haha!
Erm.. To be honest i wouldnt use gorse.. unless someone can specifically say its safe for them to use.
What do you mean long dead and broke?...
Because even if you have picked it up of the floor its still a good idea to bake it before you put it in their tanks incase theirs any bacterium on the wood.

Oak is a safe wood. Mopani wood is safe, Fruit wood as in apple and pear brances are safe. Balsar wood is safe (the soft craft wood). Most woods are safe but not the such of Pine and Cedar. But i cant remember the whole list, it is on this forum somewhere lol! x Edit - I found it its on an old topic about adding safe wood, you just need to look around!. This is the link Shootingstar put onto the other forum which says what woods are safe what woods arent. www.egerbil.com/safe_woods_for_gerbils

i didnt see anything on that list about beech, how about that? man, this is the only site i feel is reliable, there are so many contradicting or incomplete parts of information on the internet (just saw several sites saying pine is evil, many saying pine is fine. and just one explaining which kind of pine is ok and which isnt. good grief!).
