Gosh, everything I read in gerbil books 5 hears ago is proving false. I thought you were supposed to give them milk when they were pregnant. Some book I read said to fill their water bottle with milk when they were preggers and let them drink for a while, then clean/boil it and fill it back with water. In fact I gave that to poor Cocoa wile she was pregnant both times. Luvkily I haven't done in in 5 years becuase no other guildes have mentioned it , and now I see why ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png) of course these were the same books that said the best way to pick up a gerbil is by the tail. I did that with my whole first group of gerbils. Some how they managed to still love me and not break their tails. :/

I'm increasingly becoming of the opinion that you shouldn't believe all that you read in a book! I've personally come across many pieces of advice which it turns out is either false or not good advice to follow at all ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) As a result, speaking to someone that has first hand experience of keeping any pet I think is probably the best advice you could get ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Caroline

I'm afraid a lot of books about gerbils are written by people with little gerbil knowledge, they are often hamster experts. It is quite right that gerbils are lactose intolerant. I do sometimes supplement nursing mums and their pups with bread soaked in lactose (a milk substitute for baby animals).

LOL No thanks..I'm certainly no expert and believe me I often check back on things with gerbil peeps far more experienced than myself. Anyway I think Ed's new website will be pretty much the defintive guide on gerbils !!!
