As my gerbils are disappointed when I have to turn the cage top upside down so they can't use the wheel at night (it makes such a racket!), should I oil the wheel so they can use it at night? Or is it way too toxic?

Yes, I would not use common oil! I think it is toxic, and not healthy for sure. I have heard of people using olive-oil or sunfower seed oil. However I've never tried it myself. Maybe I will, because my metal wheel make also a lot of noise!

Does olive oil really stop the sound? That sounds like a reasonable idea.

That is what they said to me, but I have never tried it myself!

We use to put vegetable oil on the wheel to stop it squeeking but it will need to be done every few days. perfectly safe as far as i know and ive never had a problem with it.

I use canola oil to lubricate my gerbils' wheel. Works quite well, but gets on their fur so I have to make sure to give them a dust bath soon after oiling it!

I've never thought about that they will get it on their fur!!! ;D But I see it happen! I think you will get a greay fur with other oils too. So a sand bath is indeed handy I think!
