I know a hamster who's bedding has to be changed more often than the cage with 3 gerbils, that's why I was wondering. They're on aspen, and the rat stinks it up pretty fast too! I think he needs corn cob, or some other bedding. As far as smell goes, the aspen seems to do pretty well with the gerbils, but they also pee a lot less.... except 2 of the 3 are allergic to it.... I'd have to say that of the beddings I've tried (CareFresh, a product similar to it, Corn cob/KayCob, Sorbent, pine) I'd have to say I like the CornCob/KayCob best! I have 10 gerbils, and I just put 4 or 5 cups of it in a 10 gal, then I give them a big pile of cardboard, and within 24hrs, they've made their bedding a few inches thick! Kaytee's KayCob isn't too expensive, it's comparable to CareFresh, and the Pine I've gotten, and it lasts longer in my opinion because it nutrilizes smells really well, and my gerbils mix cardboard in it really well!
Even with only 5 cups of it, I still don't have to change the litter for around 3 weeks or so..... with the other litters it was more often!

I haven't tried cob beddings but from what you say, Ritzie, I may have to give it a try some time. I'd still probably mix it with something softer, because I've heard it can be rough.

I've never experienced sore noses with any of my gerbils, not even when the last litter was younger., I started using it right around when their eyes opened. There's a "Natural" brand, it comes in a green bag, and I think it's probably better at nutrilizing oders, it's got more of a vinigar smell. Then there's Kaytee's KayCob bedding, and it's a little sweeter of a smell, but my gerbils have been on it for 10 days now, and the only tank I smell it my girls' tank, and there's 5 of them in a 10 gal (with a high rize) but since there's 5, it's to be expected, especially since there's no more than 6 cups of it, mixed with cardboard.
