I just set mine on top. It seems too heavy for the gerbils to lift, although mine almost never jump so this hasn't really been tested. Definitely secure it if you have a cat. I was using a piece of cardboard as a lid for a while before I got my mesh one, and I just secured that with a couple of heavy objects on top.

I did something similar(to Boz's first post) and they asoloutley loved it! They made their nest under one of the cardboard sheets, but unfortunatly that collapsed after three days due to chewing, so they had to make another nest. Which is also under a sheet of carboard . But they still loved it. It's way more intersting than what I usually do! Thank you so much for the idea!

wow such great ideas defiantly give me some of my own for my two girls. I really want to find one of the top of game expander kits I think that would be a great edition to their tank and they would have a lot of fun exploring a new area.

Hi, can someone advise me for whether i should turn the ikea detolf into a gerbilarium or the ikea milsbo, seems like the detolf one is more popular but the milsbo looks bigger. What do you guys think?

What do you guys think? Just taking a quick look at the prices I would go for the detolf 100%. It should be plenty big enough for gerbils already; I would just slope the bedding a bit so they have plenty to dig in.

How often do you clean the whole lot out?

Are you asking the original poster? If so he hasn't replied to this thread in over 10yrs, lol.
If you're asking robin (been nearly 2yrs for him) about the detolf, then a big cage like a detolf could go for 2-3 months before needing a bedding change, at the upper end that would assume deep bedding going right across the cage along with spot cleaning.
