We would like to get a pair of gerbils and let them have pups. We think we will be able to cope fine with the care of them but we are worried about finding homes for the young gerbils. We live in Brighton in the south of England. Does anyone know how easy it is to find homes for gerbils in our area or in the South of England generally? How do you go about finding them homes? What about the litters with an odd number of babies so they can't be paired up? What happens , for example, if there's only one single female in a litter?
Is there anyone else locally who has breeding gerbils that we could hook up with to try and introduce single gerbils with other single ones of a similar age?
What are other people's experience of finding homes for gerbils

You should't be breeding in the first place if you're not sure if you can find them homes or can't keep unwanted gerbils. You won't get rich off selling gerbils so hopefully that's not your intentions either. You have to consider the colors too. A lot of people want gerbils butONLY certain colours..so if you get 10 black pups and nobody likes black...Then you have 10 homeless pups..
Petstores will mostly sell them as feeders or to idiots who don't know how to take care of them and only buy 1 gerbil.
You can try posting ads in papers and on websites..
Gerbils can also be kept in trios. Males this is easier. Females it's a little harder but possible. If you end up with 1 female, then your best bet is to find another gerbil and split cage it. Or try and find someone who needs a lone female to pair up with their lone female. Also if you do that, best to give them the lone pup around 5 weeks old so it's easier for them to pair with theirs.

NEVER GIVE JUST ONE GERBIL!! whatever you do victoria remember that this is the cruelest thing you can do to a gerbil cause it'll be lonely til it eventually dies! its horrible!

Keir, I think you do the right thing by asking first if there is enough possibilities to rehome the gerbils! Maybe you can contact Andrea or Amy! Andrea lives in Surrey, website: www.brooks-gerbils.co.uk. And Amy lives in Essex, website: www.freewebs.com/gerbilsinfo/. Or you can contact them by e-mail, see members-list! Maybe there are more people here from the south of England, but I know these two are for sure!
