As i said in my welcome comment I havent had gerbils in four years so am a little inexperimnced in it all. My pair are apparently mating which excites me because I have bred them before although not terribly succesfully. This time I have invested in a bigger tank 80cm by 30cm by 40cm but am really looking for any other advice you can offer me.
thanks

You cannot so much! Just give them enough nesting / bedding material en toys, always access to food and water and that is all you have to do! When you know the female is pregnant you could give them some dry cat food or mealworms, etc for some extra protein, but that is all you can do. They have to do it themselves! ;D However sometimes they have to learn it too, and unexperienced pairs will sometimes loose their first litter, but not always.

They have already had one litter with their former owner who did not want to keep them as they were mating. They were really good parents although they only had two pups which i thought was a small litter. When I had gerbils before the litter sizes were around 7-9. Does it vary that much or do you think maybe they lost a few in the early days before the qwner realised they were pregnant. Is my tank size big enuogh to breed 80cm by 30cm by 40cm. I think it is but wouldnt want them to be cramped. Finally how do i put pictures on here Thanks ;D

Are the sizes in centimeters or inches? When you only keep 2-4 Mongolian gerbils in one cage you'll need a surface of at least 800 cm² per animal. So a surface of 30 x 60 for two gerbils, 40 x 60 cm for 3 gerbils or a surface of 40 x 80 cm for 4 gerbils are good examples. When you want to keep more than 4 gerbils together, you can reduce the surface to 500 cm² per animal. The height of the cage needs to be at least 30 cm, because Mongolian gerbils can jump very well. You can increase the surface by making more floors, or connecting more cages together. It is better to have a cage that is bigger than the here named guidelines, but keep in mind that a cage that is too large can cause territory forming inside a cage.
