They will have fur when they are a couple of weeks old! That is too soon to give them away, or whatever you're planning...They will still need to feed from the mother until they are 4 to 5 weeks old. Ideally you should leave them with the mother until they are 6 weeks old. It has been proven that pups taken away too early can develop problems later on...

Floppy, she's going to feed them to her pregnant glider, not sell them. That is why she has the two females in with a male and why she only is waiting until they have fur.

Yeah I realize baby animal's must stay with their mothers as long as possible for a better quality of life. My Sugar glider joeys have to stay with thier mom for at least a minimum of 8 weeks. But only a couple of them, how do I say this nicely? Will be sold to new homes the others...... I have a pregnant sugar glider. Enough said. I don't want an comments on that cause of the reaction I got last time. So as long as they make it up to at least 11 days old I'll be happy. Shorty

To keep cages cleaned and all that stuff. Wow. i admire that. When you love an animal that much you just can't get enough of it. Shorty

Um I specifically asked that no comments were made on my decision of what i do with my Gebils. I ask that the post either be removed or changed. What I do is my own personal business. Thank you. Shorty

Since you how I and others feel about what you're doing, I won't comment any further.
I have seen your Gliders and they are really lovely. I would like to possibly have some one day...when I have room!
My babies take up so much of my time but I love them all dearly. The cleaning of duna's and tanks takes me a full day, when they all need it at the same time, which thankfully isn't very often! To be honest, I really don't mind doing it. Since I started getting tanks, they only need to be cleaned every 3/4 weeks so that helps a lot! The rest usually get cleaned every week/week and a half, depending on how many gerbils are in them and how messy they get. I usually use my nose to judge. One of my pairs make hardly any mess at all. I clean their duna every 2 weeks, although I could possibly leave it longer. The only disadvantage to having this many gerbils is that I don't get to spend as much time with individual groups, I have to spread my time between them all! I actually have 43 just now!

Your tanks only have to be cleaned out every 3-4 weeks? Oh I'm definitely getting tanks when I can!!!! How lovely! I clean the tubing in mine 3-4 times a week and then 1 time a week I clean the whole thing.
So you must breed. How do you adopt out pups? What is your best advertising avenue?

Sweetie, I do breed, but don't adopt out any of the pups...that's how I have so many! lol I've only moved to the UK a couple of months ago. When I was in Dublin, I didn't know anyone interested in gerbils, the only real option for me would have been local pet shops, which I refused to do...just before I moved to the UK I found 2 people in Dublin who may have been interested in taking some pups from me. At that time though I didn't have any pups and was too attached to my other gerbils to part with any of them! Yes, tanks are great! They require so little looking after. It's a big job when I do have to clean them but it's not often so I don't mind. I think the reason they stay clean for so long is the amount of bedding I have in them though. So it would depend on that as to how often you would need to clean them out! My boys absolutely love them! They have tunnels all over the place that connect up with each other! It's looks great

You sound like me. I get too attached also. That's why 2 years ago, I took in two stray kittens one with a broken leg. I paid for them to get all their shots and to have pins put in the kittens leg. I refused to give them to the shelter. I then gave them to good homes because they were keeping the kids up at nap time, terrorizing my other cat Boo and also my dogs, ripping at the carpet and lastly, one slept over my neck and the other around the top of my head. I could not deal with all that and a 2 1/2 year old and a 9 month old etc. Then last year I took in a stray dog who just one our hearts. She trapped a copperhead (poisonous snake) in our back yard. It had already bitten one dog earlier that year and was under the little kiddie pool. Oops nuff about me.

Do you really think Shorty will be able to feed gerbil pups to her sugar gliders? They are SOO cute when they just get fur: I can understand that some pets do need fresh (live) meat, but I understand most people opt for fresh or frozen mouse pinkies (when they are just born, they are not as cute and you haven't had as much time to bond to them) and my choice, quite frankly, would be mealworms, waxworms and crickets, which are very nutritious and don't make a bloody mess. I sometimes feed them to my gerbils and degus. I hope you all don't mind my frank discussion of a sensitive topic.

Floppy, What do you think??? Yup I did. How could I not? She saved my dogs from getting bitten and my kids!! I have a picture of the little heroine in the "other" section. Sandy, You have a viable question. You put it nicely and did not pass judgement but merely stated what others do and what you would do . The answer is yes she can and does feed the pups to the gliders. For what ever reason that is what she chooses. I have not been in that situation so I will not say yeah or nay but am passing on information from a very heated previous thread that may have been deleted(?).
