Hello! I am a new parent to an adorable Jerboa. I have had gerbils in the past but realize this is a different creature (and not a species of gerbil). Please give me any information or a good website on these little guys. I heard somewhere they shouldn't have water bottles but they did at the store? All I could find for food was hamster food..Is there types of bird seed I should ad any carrots and apples? I want to be a good parent to him and be more educated about their needs. Thank you!

Thank you. I have also joined that forum. Unfortuntely they do not have an article on Jerboas...as they are not a gerbil species. (Sorry for posting here..but I thought maybe someone here might know) I can't tell if he is Jaculus jaculus or Jaculus orientalis. Please note I would never hold him like this except to try to show his fuzzy 3 toes and he was being held only 12 inches off the floor..not as high as it looks. I hope it helps with size reference. We are going to construct a very large cage for him out of a huge storage bin (maybe two connected) with a wire top.

Oh he's ADORABLE! *squeeze* As for identifying him, you might have some luck asking Eddie Cope ("Admin" on the eGerbil forums) - he probably will be able to help you!

Oh my, what a strange little animal! Like a cross between a kangaroo, a rabbit, and a gerbil. He's so cute - those huge eyes and gigantic back feet are hilarious! To be honest, none of us will probably be able to help you - most of us only keep Mongolian gerbils - but I'd recommend talking to Eddie, too. Oh, and where did you get him? A pet store, or a special jerboa breeder? XD I had NO idea you could keep those things as pets! Is he okay with being handled and stuff?

Thank you so much for your help...It is thought he is the smaller of the two (Jaculus Jaculus AKA Lesser Jerboa). But time will tell..If he grows a lot bigger then he is obviously the other kind!
I have had gerbils in the past but wow this is so different! My husband surprised me with him from a place called LotteMart...We are in Korea and it is like a Super Walmart with a pet store like section. We didn;t know exactly what he was or how old because neither of us speak Korean. I know some people have had them in the UK...not sure about the US.
As far as handling him he is just as tame as my other gerbils. If I sit on th efloor he will even hop up and jump around my lap. When I pick him up he goes fairly limp and lets me pet him and hold him. He is very sweet and curious in nature. I had read somewhere they can be very tame but if they aren't they can smack you really well with those back legs and claws. That has not been an issue.
I have been informed he needs a huge cage with tons of dirt (they like to tunnel like gerbils...plus need extra height for all the hopping) He does hop just like a kangaroo! Maybe I can post a video of him if anyone is interested.

soo cute! Do they also have to be hold with 2?? So they are like more calm than gerbils, or are they just as curious??

Ohmigosh he's adorable!! *HUGGLES* Do they have front paws too or just the back legs? I can't tell from the pictures... except maybe the last one, but it might just be the back paw up farther... Regardless, he's the cutest little thing ever, and now I want one really bad. XD. But I don't have a big enough aquarium/cage/habitat thing for it, and know nothing about them, plus I've never seen one around here, so i guess that won't be happening so soon....but anyway... oh and I love the tail too! :3
But sorry, i don't know anything about them or any forums. Just wanted to comment on the cuteness... :3.

@_______@ WANT!! So adorable and unique! It looks like it has no front paws! xD It's like a mini kangaroo. >3 his eyes are HUGE! Are they mostly nocturnal? His little back legs look so fragile. Sorry, rambling now. xD

I'm going to Holland in April so hopefully I will find 1 or 2 to bring back, but if anyone knows of a breeder here in the UK please let me know ;D
