Hey all. I would join but i'm not thirteen so if there are alot of questions on the guest board then sorry! well anyways, last night i had a dream that my dad bought 2 black gerbils and stuck em in the 20gallon long aquarium with out introducing them to my other ones. My dad didn't even know the genders! thankfully the black ones were both male (like my other 2) but that leaves me with the question could you fit 4 gerbils in a 20 gallon long aquarium with no tank topper?(i have lotsa bedding) thanks, man

A 20-gal is really only suitable for 2-3 gerbils. A group of four should have 25-40 gallons of space. And it would be very difficult to introduce two new gerbils to an established pair.

also is it possible to do a permanent split aquarium (with a glass or plexieglass devider) and house gerbils in one side but another creature such as hamsters in the other?
oh and thanks for the reply, i had an idea that someone would say all that

I wouldn't ever recommend it. It would stress the other animals out, and it would likely cause issues in your gerbil clans.

ok i have a question about conversion of cm cubed to gallons
i measured this tank of my friends, and it is 45 x 30 x 25 = 33 750 cm cubed
i was wondering, how many gallons is this

That's just under 9 gallons (US). Barely enough for a single gerbil. This is a good site for conversions: www.onlineconversion.com/(cubic cm and gallons would be under volume)

It's not possible. Their chromosomes are different, I believe. I may be wrong, but there are no successful crossbreeds with Mongolian Gerbils. Other species of gerbils, such as Cheesmans, can be crossbred, I believe.

It is not possible to produce live young by crossing a gerbil and a mouse/rat/hamster. Jirds are close enough that it might be possible with one of the smaller species, but I don't know of any recorded cases. I know that Pallids and Cheesemans (both genus Gerbillus) will produce hybrids, and so will Shaw's Jirds and Libyan Jirds (both genus Meriones), though there are some fertility issues with the F1 Shaws x Libyan hybrids. A "dwarf" Shaw's Jird was kept with a Mongolian Jird (gerbil), but they never bred.

Other than SStar's example of jirds and gerbils, I don't think anyone has successfully kept gerbils and other species together. However, in rare instances, gerbils can raise the young of other species. The young should be taken out from the gerbil as soon as possible.

so if my hamster had babies but she died, i could get a female gerbil who is nursing or had young, to take care of them? and she wouldn't eat them?

If the litters are roughly the same age, then it's possible. It's not terribly likely that she'd eat them, but still possible.
