Vixen that is a great idea. I often find many contradicting facts on the forum. Nice suggestion

that is a great idea! I've had gerbils for 19 years, which I can't believe, but I've learned the most in the last few years thanks to having the internet and this forum. I need to add a photo but don't have time today, will do that at sometime. I've learned the computer/net mostly on my own or from trying to figure out how to do things through the net. Tammy

That's a great idea! As someone who is fairly new to gerbils, I would really appreciate knowing such information. What could also be helpful is if kind of like on Yahoo Answers, there was a place you can enter the source you are using; some people put just "so and so many years experience" and some people give a site. I noticed some people on this site recycle what others have said in the past, but don't necessarily know where the info came from and if it is true; just because it has been said enough times, doesn't meen the information is suddenly true; in this case, someone can use a previous answer on this site as a source. Stop me if im way off track.

Guys, There is a problem with the 'Years Of Experience' thing. Just because you have '10 years experience. Doesn't always mean you know what you are doing or what advice to give to certain situations. A good way to make your advice better to listen to is not always your XP levels, but if you can back it up with solid facts. Link to pages, or quotations from pages etc. It's similar to the whole thing on some forums where they have status that go up with how many posts you have 'newbie' 'novice' 'highly experienced' etc. Doesn't always mean you know alot, because of how much you post. Which is why we don't have that on our forum. I'm worried that this might cause rivalry. 'I have 1 more years experience than you! So i know more! nuuuuh'. Do you know where I'm coming from? We like to keep the forum peaceful and non confrontational. I'll have a chat with Kristi and the other mods and see what they think about this. I'm not having a go or telling you off! I'm just worried that we might get some spiffs round the forum with people butting heads . x

I agree with Silvergerbil. If you'd like to put your "years of experience" in your sig, then go for it, but please, everybody< keep in mind that, like Silvergerbil said, just because somebody has "5 years" doesn't mean that they know more or are better gerbil owners than somebody's who's sig says "2 years".

Yep you guys make good points... no reason to start any rivalry. I do find that this board is much more peacful than the other gerbil board. I don't stay up to date with it, but when I have read it, it was a bunch of angry people getting angry at everything. You guys are so much nicer

It is a good thought Vixen but its not always the case.
For instance take someone who has 1 years experience and someone who has 5 years experience. Just because you've kept gerbils for 5 years doesn't mean you know more. I've had gerbils for 3 years now and i personally haven't got a scooby about genetics. Does that mean someone should take my advice on genitics because i have 3 years gerbil keeping experience?

hi i think its a good idea if you want to put it. but i have 15 years experience on having gerbils - but 14 of those i really didnt know much about them to be honest! ive learnt more by being on these forums etc, but if i put 15 years it would sound like i knew a lot more than i actually do! someone may then take my advice more than someone elses as i 'had more experience' and thats just untrue (although it would sound good!) i actually like having a varied reply as some of the newbies bring some very valid points and ideas which may be overlooked otherwise.
