Seems to be a boy/girl thing in our household... the girls couldn't care less, but the boys go mad for them, and it gives them something else to do trying to crack the shell. So yes, they're absolutely fine, just like with everything else, don't overdo it.

Make sure they aren't salted and don't give too many. Peanuts are extremely fatty.

Monkey nuts are yummy but if they eat too much they are going to climb like monkeys! ;D (just joking)

Shell nuts are safe? Next time I'm somewhere, I'll check the place out for these. Can't wait to watch my gerbils run around when them in their mouths! So cute!

They are fine as an occasional treat but not too many as they do have a high fat content, and gerbils that have a diet too high in fat are more prone to strokes. When I first gave mine a monkey nut they didn't know what to do with it, Then I broke one open for them so they could see what's inside and they grabbed it off me, shredded the shell, ignored the peanuts inside and came back begging for more. Clearly destroying the shell is more exciting than the actual peanuts inside. It took them a little while but they have now worked out that peanuts are a yummy treat and do eat them now. Silly gerbies.

LOL racammann! That's what all of my gerbils have done - just shred the shell and ignore the nut inside! I save them for the local squirrels since my gerbils won't eat them.
