Does anybody make their own gerbil recipe? I was thinking of using Ecotrition and then adding some stuff. Would these foods work? where can I get them cheap? Any other ideas?
*Pumpkin Seeds *Sunflower Seeds *Oatmeal *Cheerios *Peanuts *Corn *Dried Veggies *Dehydrated fruit (Probably their favorite!) *Raisins
Thanks! Sarah

When we ran out of food and all the shops were closed we gave our gerbils the following - - Popping Corn (Not popped but you could try it popped!) - Cornflakes - Pumpkin Seeds - Pine Nuts
That's all we had in but raisins and other dried fruit would be good! I bet they'd like banana chips... I know they LOVE sunflower seeds because they get it in the food mix I buy and they pick all of those out first. Good luck with the home-made gerbil food!

I agree with Shoogle about dried banana chips. My gerbils love them. Pumpkin seeds are easier and cheaper to find in the fall, so stock up. But don't expect amazing bargains on them. I get peanuts, corn, and sunflower seeds from the bird section at Ace Hardware. It's cheaper than the petstore and even the grocery store. Also check the garden center at Walmart since they are usually reasonable too. Grocery items like oatmeal, cheerios and raisins can be purchased at Sam's Club if you want to stock up, or just buy the generic variety at your grocery store. Dried fruit and veggies can be very expensive. But keep an eye out for decent deals. Dried bananas are usually resonable though. My gerbils also like to munch on dry pasta.
Just make sure you aren't overindulging them in fatty sugary treats and calories in your mix while diluting the protein in their diet. I give my gerbils all those things, but as "treats", not as a significant part of their daily food. They also get Ecotrition, and every other day, I'll add a little bit of my treat-mix into it. They also get treat-mix during their weekly sandbath.

Thanks! I need something that can be used as their daily diet (with high protein for pups and moms) and that can be kept in a bag or container for a long period of time, nothing with moisture. Would that make raisins a problem?

I think most raisins are dehydrated enough it's not an issue.

Raisins are dry enough, high in sugar though! You could try frozen peas out on a tray and just let it dry out, maybe on a sunny spot and add to your mix.

*Pumpkin Seeds *Sunflower Seeds *Oatmeal *Cheerios *Peanuts *Corn *Dried Veggies *Dehydrated fruit (Probably their favorite!) *Raisins Do not feed them corn. Its has no nutritional value. Be careful with dried veggies, as most have salt or sugar on them. I would also avoid peanuts, walnuts and pecans are healthier alternatives. This is my mix. Moonstone Gerbil Base Diet Kaytee Wild Bird Seed, Fruit and Nut (15 lbs) Sunflower Hearts (7 lbs) Wild finch food (2.5 lbs) Dried Fruit (raisens, bannana chips) (12-20 oz) Cheerios (store brand) (1 box) Bran Flakes (store brand no raisens)(1 box) Granola/Cereal (1 box) Puffed Wheat (1 box) Split Peas (1 lbs) Barley (1 lbs) Oatmeal (2 large tubs) Nuts (ie pecan, walnut, pine nut)(12-16 oz) Pumpkin Seeds (1 lbs) *all cereals must have less than 3g sugar. moonstonegerbils.com/index_files/homemade.html
