i have noticed that my gerbils cover there food bowl with bits of chewed cardboard large and small pieces and i just wondered if all gerbils do this and if so why?

They bury their food so that no one else steals it, its their stash lol, its normal for them to do it, But have you tried scatter feeding? its better because it keeps them from sitting at the bowl and eating their favorite foods, plus from what i heard, more of the differnt kinds of the seeds and nuts that gerbils wont eat unless thats all they have left, they eat when its scattered across and through out their bedding, makes it an adventure to find their food ")

My girls burry their food as well. I don't understand when they eat, it always looks buried to me!
