I was at Coopers today and got three real big glass jars (shaped like small fish bowls) and I was wondering because my little gerbs are BIG chewers if it was safe to give them these glass jars. I have searched but I cannot find anything about glass jars. Thanks Phoebe x

Yes. They will most likely use them as bathrooms because gerbils like smooth, cold surfaces to goto the bathroom on. And, they can't chew it.

If the glass is thick enough I think it's allright to give it to them. Glass is a very hard material so I don't think they can chew thát. Maybe they would try it But I don't think they can.

I've seen glass used in two cases, my gerbs (Daru and Cabal) have a big flower vase in theirs and my friend uses a glass cup with one of her gerbs, I have never seen a Gerbil try to chew on the glass, instead they seem more interested in trying to dig at the sides.

They love to burrow inside glass jars. It stops them from corner digging. They seem to think it is a burrow half started, and they want to enlarge it! Good exercise for them too! I sometimes put a glass jar into a small or shallow tank that can't hold a wheel for that reason. They also love to sleep in them, I guess the small space is cozy. And in the summer, they stretch out on the top on their bellies, the glass helps them keep cool. Versatile things!

I use square shaped jam jars, about 500 ml (2 cups).

I use all sizes! I got a package of 2 glasses from the $1 store. Think they were 10 ro 12 oz glasses. Also, jam/jelly jars. 2nd hand stores are great to find these things, since they cost less.... and mine usually potty in them!

Are glass jars with flat sides ok in breeding tanks? I mean if I put a jar in each tank with my breeders should the pups be ok? I mean if they decide to sleep in it?
Thanks!

Glass jars are fine. My gerbils dig in them, fill them with bedding, empty them, go to loo in them, sleep in them, nest in them, lie on top of them, bite them jump over them, and sometimes I put sand in and they empty them. (OK so that ones a hamster ) (cheeky thing climbed in, good thing I'd finished my drink) Old mugs with broken handles are good too Well despite my 1000s of pics on photobucket alone, and pictures of gerbils in mugs, chimneys, wheels, coconuts, saucers and baskets, I cannot find a pic of a gerbil in a jar!!! Sorry.

My gerbils just love glasses and jars. They have a blast. I made a movie of them in the jar if anyone is interested, email me.
