So I ended up making a bin cage for DiNozzo and McGee a few months back (havne't been around a computer), and figured I will post a picture of it. It is about a 29 gallon bin, with a hardware cloth lid and another cage on top of it to make second level. (Can click to make bigger) The second picture is from a few days ago when I changed and added some more boxes for them to chew and play in. They do not have a ramp up to the second part, they jump and climb up, and they do not have a water bottle but a water bowl. They are currently 1 year and 1 month old. And only nuts/pee up on the second level on a hard surface (so their bedding is staying fresh) I am still trying to figure out what to put on the hardware cloth to help protect their feet.

You can just put cardboard on the hardware cloth and replace it as they chew it up. Nice little setup there

Nice little setup there Basically what I have been doing, along with them having a chin chiller as well where their food sits. Was just seeing if anyone had any other ideas. So far they haven't noticed the zip ties that hold the cage to the metal. And if Jethro was still alive they would have a ramp cause he was more of a ramp guy as the twins were crazy must climb EVERYTHING! So, made them put their jumping/climbing skills to work....

That is the best site I have seen for doing bin cages, I will bookmark it for when I do another one, I did my lid how i did just cause I didn't trust myself cutting the lid up. I might contact her to see if she has anything to say about adding toppers to bin cages... since I enjoy having a second area to put stuff for them, and prefer bowls to bottles (well for adults anyways if I ever got into breeding I would use bottles of course).

I'm glad so many people are finding my bin page useful. It's by far the most popular page on the site.

I'm glad so many people are finding my bin page useful. It's by far the most popular page on the site. HI! *waves* tis kind of nice to meet you though we haven't actually met. I do love your site, since when looking up bin cages normally the tiny ones for Hamsters comes up (which that boggles my mind why make a bin cage if it is going to be the same size as the crap cages you can buy) and though they are useful, it is nice to see gerbil info up too. do you think that using your site it would be easy to add on a cage topper? since I might end up building another cage down the road, and I like the way yours have turned out.

Actually, I've never put a topper on a bin cage yet... I've thought about it quite a bit, and we have spare bird cages, but you're ahead of me when it comes to doing.
I did do one bin with the hardware cloth formed into a small upper level. I put their fresh cardboard, paper and hay on the upper shelf so they have to fetch it from there. And they can sit up there for a better view out. But it's not all that useful otherwise, so I'm not sure I want to recommend it. Not all our gerbils figure out how to use it either. I had one trio of adult males in it for a while where only one of them used it (I think the others were too lazy to jump up, lol), but it was nice visiting with him up top (and feeding him treats).
I don't see why a topper couldn't be incorporated into it though. Just a matter of laying it out so it's still easy to access the gerbils and clean everything. I'm surprised yours is working so well without any reinforcement at the base. The project might be easier than I thought.

this is something that i am trying to attempt (when i find a suitable bin!) i had in my head that i would have the hardware cloth lid, but then cut a decent sized hole into it so i can attach a ladder for them to get up. Want there to be no chance of them catching themselves on it though...don't want any injuries!
I have an old hamster cage from when i was at uni and want to attach that on with cable ties or the wire you mention johanne on your site. Might need to rope Dad in to help me!
Bandit - cant quite see from your picture how big your hole is, how big did you cut it?? Im one of these people that has to plan and plan and plan before i go ahead and do something! :-)

I used Johannes site to make a bin cage, then cut a small hole in the center of the mesh top. I then fastened the topper to the mesh top, and vwalla! Hope I helped!
