On the left the feamle pup, pallid in this case, 14 days old. you can clearly see the nipples under her arms. On the right the male pup, no nipples and a large gap between urethra and anus.

It's the same as mongolians though!! So the pics should work for both!! It's good to have a pup sexing thread though, this is a good quality picture and I can see the differences more distinctly - before I found it very hard to tell the difference between pups that young, now that you've made a point of the large gap aswell it's a lot more apparent Before, I would have mostly relied on the presence of nipples until they got a little older.

I'm glad you will find it useful. Remember not all pups are this clear but I think you have a good chance of getting it right this way.

I still have problems sexing, unless it's really obvious and I have a comparison with 2 gerbils of the same age and size. Does the urethra look different in male and female adults? Where is the penis and the testes in relation to the urethra?

urethra = where the wee comes out The testes will be between the urethra and anus (but tend to hang well behind )

Forgot to say those are excellent pictures. Couldn't be better. Thanks. OK. I think I'm clear on the testes now. I know what the urethra does and where it's located in humans. So that bump on the male is the penis and the urethra is inside it? And females don't have a bump (penis), just a hole for the urethra? Correct? I don't clearly see either a urethra or a vaginal opening on this female. Unless the urethral opening is that tiny dark dot. In that case, the distances between the urethras and anuses look the same in these pics to me. Sorry if I'm confusing. I'm confusing my self. That's the problem.

It's not easy I agree Just get used to gerbils and should you get a chance to look at pups in the fur do so. If you look at the little girl you'll see an inverted V or Y shape, thats the urinogenital area. And yes the 'bump' is the little boys Hope that helps!

well the nipples show until about 16 days just before the eyes open and by then the gap is obvious. I think itsalso easier when you have the pups in front of you. Congratulations on the wonderful pics btw

Great thread.
I can often tell the gender of the pups when they are about 2-3 days old simply by looking at their little "parts" its easy to see whcih are going to be male and female.
