What does it mean when a gerbil moves it's tail side to side like wagging?

mine windmills her tail when trying to keep balance... LOL So do mine. We call them 'helicopter gerbils' . I know that when mice shake their tails, it's a sign that they're very angry or upset. I'm not 100% sure what it means when a gerbil shakes it's tail, but I'd guess it's either a sign of excitement or extreme annoyance. The positioning of the ears might provide additional clues about a tail wagging gerbil's mood - forward/cupped = curious/excited; back/flattened = fearful/angry. HTH

If they are whipping their tail back and forth, it is an aggressive behavior. It is terribly cute, but it is a warning, not a happy to see you.
Gerbils do not wag their tails like dogs to. It is aggressive or frustrated behavior.
Usually i only see it when I'm split caging two gerbils together.
