I think a lot of stores are REALLY bad, there is some good individual stores. The good ones just no way make up for the horror of the bad, but the whole company just doesn't care. If you do some researching into where the pets are before they go to the store you will know why I hate them so much.

I suppose I do realise that the majority of stores are bad. I do buy toys and shavings from the store as I like to chat to the staff and such but... don't small animals in pet stores come from mills? That's why I decided to only buy gerbs from a breeder or rescue. My original trio were pet shop bought but all of the others have been rescued in some way, and I'm due to get some breeder pups on Thursday/Friday. I have to say, the correspondence between the breeder has been lovely and it's great knowing where my pups have come from and that they were raised well.

I've found variability in staff knowledge between P@H stores in my area but also within individual stores too. At each of the stores I've been to there are some staff members that obviously care about the animals and are knowledgeable about them and others that are really not interested.
I assume that P@H are getting their animals from rodent mills otherwise I think they would be more willing to discuss where they come from. From the behaviour of my original 3 it didn't seem like they had been handled at all before we got them. We got Squeaky from a smaller independent pet store and she was so different. She loved us right away and insisted on being picked up and having lots of people company. I've been back to their store since and I was really upset with how they are keeping their animals. They are now breeding animals in the store and they have far too many in too small cages. That's a real shame as it used to be really good - Squeaky was in a nice big tank with 10 inch deep bedding, along with 2 other pups. When I met with an RSPCA officer recently to talk about fostering for them I told her about the conditions and she said they'd had other unfavourable reports and they were going to be inspecting them soon.

I don't buy anything from P@H, I refuse to fund that kind of mass scale animal cruelty. I use to live across the road from one, and I would still spend bus fair to go to independent stores or to go to pick stuff up off people the other side of Sheffield. You'd tell them about the conditions the animals are kept in but they'd never do anything about it. In my opinion they should be banned from selling live animals. At least they need to introduce tough laws on minimum housing conditions with serious penalties. RSPCA around me are also completely useless, I don't deal with them anymore. I rescued 2 kittens and RSPCA wouldn't pick them up or even give me advice about what to do with them. I should point out that I hate cats and have no idea what to do with kittens so really needed help. I found a home for them myself and they turned out to be 10 days old.

What upsets me most about P@H is the totally unsuitable housing that they sell. They don't sell a single hamster cage that is anywhere near big enough.

I've seen those gerbils on Preloved. I feel very sad for the little ones if their new owners think it's ok for them to live in such a tiny cage. I was wondering if they were an accidental litter and that the owners were hoping that setting them up in a cage might make it easier to find homes for them.

I actually have an excellent P@H 10 mins walk from my house. The pets are kept in excellent conditions & they sell some great things for them. Everytime I go in I'm asked about my 4, they really care about the pets there. I definitely encourage anyone in Birmingham to go to the P@H at the Swan Centre in Yardley the pets are kept in quite nice tanks, with enough space for them all. Not sure I wanna go to the other P@H by the way people are describing them.

It's not just the individual stores that are the main concern, it is also where the pets have been before they reach a point where you can see them. If you knew what happens to them before they reach the shop floor you'd never shop there before. If you do a little research you will be able to find out. I won't post it on here as it is quite upsetting to say the least. The fact the company is still running is beyond me, any breeder who did this would have the animals seized and a hefty fine on their hands.
