Hello Amie,
I also believe that all animals even if the yare of the same species reacts differently to other animals. Like humans, all gergbils and cats react differently than thier counterparts.
To be safe, the lid should be able to hold the cats weight and be secure enough so the cat can not pry it open. I made my own lids with wire and wood. I also put them on a shelf system in which the spaces were just big enough to fit the tanks and lids with an inch of space in between. on the top shelf, I secures the lid with 2 bricks or rocks.
As a side note, my cat was interested in the gerbils and did look at them but on several occasions when the gerbils where out, the cat prefered my attention to them. My dog on the other hand, knocked the tank over and slobbered all over the gerbils. He licked them and slobbered all over them.

I would just like to add my own experience. My gerbils lived with no problems from the cats for over 2 years. I thought my cages were cat proof. One of my cats managed to pry the enclosure open and thus killed one of my gerbils. I think it is best to err of the side of caution. My complacency resulted in the death of one of my gerbils.

i agree that its not worth the risk. my cats love gerbilvision..but i never leave them unsupervised. mostly because my gerbils aren't afraid of my cats at all...and i think my cats would eventually learn to get to them (cats are smarter than most people give them credit for..and could shred a hole in a mech tank topper if given enough time) i don't think my cats would even know what to do with them if they caught them, but they can't help their instinct to try.
incidently, everytime i take my gerbils out of their tank to play in the bathtub, if i leave the lid off, there is always a cat sitting in their tank when i come back. they always look at me like "where'd they go? well i'll just sit here and wait for them to come back.."
