Did these guys ever declan? lol cause I want to do something like that. I think it looks cool having that many together, but yeah I don't want anyone dead. Also, if anyone knows.. I'm always hearing about gerbils fighting that have tubes..like Habitrail type set ups.. Wouldn't the fact that only 1 gerbil can get through a tube at a time be most of the reason for that? Fighting over who can get by and who gets by first? (I saw that happening when I used them).. If you use something like a pipe, where a couple could get through and they could climb over eachother.. wouldn't that be a lot safer and most likely NOT cause any problems? Yes? ;D

I remember one of the members here talking about one gerbil guarding the exit tunnel. I would think large clans could cause this sort of territoriality. Even if the tube is large, I would think you could still have problems. Kind of like how territorial gerbils can fight over housing even if several can fit in the house. I can be sure, however. Peter's setup is pretty nice though and I'd *love* to do something like that if I could find the right tubing.
I know I've asked before, Peter, but what is it that you used for tubing in that picture?

I have never had any problems with that set up. There used to live several gerbils in it, at it maximum about 15 gerbils. It was a breeding pair with several pups of different ages. But when I stopped breeding with that pair, I seperated the two tanks, and place the males in one tank and the females in the other. Maybe I was lucky.... The tube was a drainage tube! ......And I can tell you even in that tube they could pass each other!!

A drainage tube from a washing machine? I tried an old vacuum cleaner hose, they stuck their head in and then immediately scuttled back out. Do you remember the diameter of the tube?

I have one male like that. He's kind of weird. (I blame it on him being a gerbilfarm/petshop gerbil) I've stopped using wooden houses because he'd sit in it and squeak. He'd probably do something like that with the tubes. I'm thinking of seperating him once I figure out which other he seems to get along with the most.

I had 9 in a 10 gallon tank. So to me, it looks like you could fit like 50 in there. Cant't decide what I want to do with them. Get a bigger tank..but I can't afford a 50 gallon tank nor really have the room for one. Or use like one of those huge 50+ gallon plastic containers since they're light and cheap. But then you can't really see inside it and it will probably smell. Find a way to add on to the tank.. like tubes..then risk fighting. I saw a wire cage thing you put on top of tanks, they can climb up. But they'll probably sit there and chew the bars. ughh.

No, one that is used here in the Netherlands to drain the soil in gardens, etc. but mostly for agriculture! As you know most part of the Netherlands is below sea level, so the soil is quickly too wet! My uncle had it, he grows small coniferous trees (I'm not sure if that is the English word for it). The diameter was about 5-10 cm, somewhere between. In the beginning they were scared to go into the tube and did only get halveway. After one succeeded, the rest did follow shortly after!
