I know it may seem like a stupid question, but yesterday in science, my teacher was giving us some facts and we had to decide whether they were true or not. He said that hamsters blink one eye at a time, and it turns out that that was true! So, I'm starting to wonder if gerbils blink. I've never seen my gerbils blink, but maybe it's possible..

That is not true about hamsters. I have two Syrian hamsters and one winter white dwarf and all can blink both eyes at once.

I did a bit of research and capable of blinking one eye at a time, not that they always do it. Though I'm not sure I know of any animal that is capable of blinking that can't blink one eye at a time. o.o

I think the deal with hamsters is many *usually* blink their eyes one at a time, as opposed to other animals that usually blink both eyes. Apparently tortoises do this also, and it's thought to be an adaption to help avoid predators by keeping at least one eye open most of the time. Gerbils (obligatory Richard Gere joke) close both eyes and hold their breath...

I have never seen any of my gerbils blink with both eyes.
I have seen them wink with one , but now are we being told that they Are actually blinking with one eye??!!!
I thought they winked when they were really happy? *
I have seen them wink with one eye, and then with the other eye, and sometimes a wink back to the first eye.
I have have never seen any fluttering of eyes.
And yes, my tortoise blinked ...but from the bottom eyelid upwards. ( can't remember whether one or two eyes at same time)
*v depressing news if this is not true....

Digby flutters her eyes when she is eating something good. I am pretty sure they wink when they are happy. If I am letting Digby run around or I call her a pretty girl, she winks

Winking in gerbils is a friendly greeting and sign of happiness/contentment.

My Bertie is most likely to wink when I take him out, hold him in my hand where he sits snuggling and looking at me. I stroke him and I ask him who is a beautiful boy, then say "you are, you are" and that's when he's most likely to wink.
He then gets to have his playtime.

Today, right on cue, Bertie sat in my hand and winked. I didn't even get a chance to tell him how beautiful he is. He then started purring and vibrating happily which he hasn't done for a while before his playtime. I was so pleased . And later, he tucked into sunflower seeds and ... Another wink. Yeay!
