So lots of studies show that mice seem to learn better when exposed to classical music (hence Baby Einstein and such). They also show that mice are extremely bothered and can become mildly psychotic when exposed to really loud, really heavy rock music. It's actually used as an aversive stimulus in certain experiments that test for other things. I've noticed that my gerbil, Chip, loves the song Fur Elise by Beethoven. Whenever I play it, he sort of stops and looks around, as if he's transfixed. But he doesn't seem to be freezing in fear. Other types of music make him noticeably anxious and he appears indifferent to others. But he always pays attention when Fur Elise comes on. It's adorable! My gerbils also seem to like Debussy and Mozart quite a bit.

I used Marvin Gaye in the car on the way to the vets to calm my two , Sandi and Pebbles :-)

Hmm... now I must try this and see if my gerbils respond to calming music!

Funny story, last Christmas I decorated the boys tank area in the living room with Christmas lights and things for Thanksgiving (They get moved to the table and the tree goes up where they were) well I got these snowman lights to hang in front of the tank and it plays jingle bells when you press a button. that was the day I found out the boys hate Christmas songs. no matter what song, if it was Christmas they can't stand it. they love all other types of music, especially instrumental. Well, this year we didn't put up those lights since my little cousins thinks it funny how they run around and would press the button all day Thanksgiving.

Not exactly music, but my gerbils get really freaked out when they hear my alarm clock beep. When I'm setting the time, it beeps with every button press and the gerbs freeze, then start running around and often end up thumping and diving for cover. It's really strange. What natural threat might an electronic beep sound like to them? Some kind of predator?

My first clan would stop moving and just sit in my cupped hands purring(vibrating) whenever I sang one particular song in French. I've tried other languages and other songs without getting the same result.

The first time Digby actually cuddled in my hands and fell asleep into a tiny ball I was playing songs from Doctor Who.

I did a science experiment on this a few years ago when Rhino was still a baby. It was pretty fun!

My gerbils seem to prefer Chopin, but I'm not sure if they're perking up to listen or just terrified... any way to tell the difference?

Gerbils are prey animals so they're naturally always on edge and nervous. Mine have been more so lately. I'm not sure why. One of the gerbils used to be very social with me and loved to climb in my hand and up my arm but now he's been more distant and not climbing my hand at all. He actually has been giving me the cold shoulder unless I'm bringing them food. Not sure what caused the change.

My girls most definitely love music which I discovered at Christmas when I was playing Christmas music. Marcy especially, (the black gerbil) just stops whatever she's doing and stands there listening for as long as the music plays. She seems to like softer music best. As soon as I turn the music off, she snaps out of her trance and goes about her business. I'll sometimes leave soft music playing for them when I go to work.

All I can say is that my gerbils don't seem to like it when my son practices the Sax, but seem to enjoy when he practices the piano.
