I recently noticed one of my gerbils (Hokey) has a swollen face. It's mostly around the jaw on one side of the face and also under the jaw. I did noticed that he lost weight (he was overweight) But, he is eating and otherwise acts normal. He doesn't seem to mind if I touch the swelling. I'm worried, any ideas?

It can be a problem! It can of course be a tumour or an abscess! So I recommend you to visit a vet!
This is the information that you will find on my website:

Thank you, Peter for your reply. We took Hokey to the vet and it was indeed a tumor, so he was euthanized today. We couldn't stand to see him suffer and starve. We are extremely saddened by his passing. He was just a little critter, but he had such personality and he brought us so much joy.
His partner, Ham, is 2 years old and is now lonely. We have 2 other female gerbils, Smokey and Cocoa, but we do not want to breed.
Any ideas on how we keep Ham happy?
Again, thank you.

Sorry for you loss! It is always sad to loose a friend, even if it is a pet! Personally I think it is good that you have chosen to euthanize him when he suffers. It was the only thing you could do for him. You could introduce two very young male pups (5-8 weeks old) to Ham, most of the times adult males will accept very young pups, because they won't see a threat in them! When you introduce two you would not have they same problem when the older adult will die too when he gets older. But the choise is of course yours to make! One new male is of course possible too!
