Nees bit the dropper off too... maybe you should get plastic, because you would want her to break glass in her mouth!

That's what I'm afraid of. I'll use the plastic. If she bites it at least she won't hurt herself. If I got the baytril I would have to get it from a vet, buy the ornacycline I can get at any petstore that sells Mardel products. If fact, I'm surprised I don't have some already! It's a common medicine used for fish, but I've always used an alternative to tetracycline.
EDIT: I picked up the med and headed home. She was breathing even harder when I got to her. I desolved one tablet in 8 oz. of water. I gently picked her up and calmed her down then cupped her in my hands as described here. I put a single drop on her lips to see if she would lick it off. She bit the eyedropper and gave it a lick. I noticed one eye caked with a creamy red/orange residue, blood possibly? She then convulsed and I couldn't calm her down. I could hardly keep her cupped in my hands. Blood flooded both eyes and she finally lay still. I was too late. Thank you everyone for trying to help us, at least I know what signs to look for in my other two and know I can treat them immediatly.

I think it was simply a cold turned into pnuemonia. If I knew her heavy breathing on Saturday meant congestion, I might have found out about the ornacycline earlier. As it was, I simply cuaght on too late. Luckily, I have learned something from this unexpected experienence and have a chance of preventing a repeat scenerio with my two boys. Hopefully, it will never come to that, but at least now I know.

Thanks, The other two are just fine. I keep all my gerb.s in seperate tanks becuase I aquired them at different times. Thier personalities are so different I could never introduce them to each other without worrying. Never the less, they got a good cleaning last night as well. I didn't want to risk Cleo's infection having been contagous.

Yeah, that is true. That's so sad. I can relate to sick pets, but not really that sick. My gerbils both got injured when I went away on holiday last. Some little kids broke one's leg and the other's tail. Luckily they both healed fine. On her grave, give Cleo a message from everyone on the Mongolian GErbil Website Forum to give her best wishes in Gerbil Heaven!

On her grave, give Cleo a message from everyone on the Mongolian GErbil Website Forum to give her best wishes in Gerbil Heaven! That's very nice, thank you. I'll do that once I work up the nerve to go out there.

Manix, I am sorry to learn of your loss . I sense that you loved Cleo and it was traumatic for you to watch her in that condition. I thank you for sharing your experience. Her passing has aided you in recognizing the symptoms earlier and aided the members by allowing your shared experience to become our knowledge. Thank you for sharing!

I'm sorry to hear Cleo has passed on. She was such a spirited gerbil. I remember the troubles you had with her biting you everytime your hand went in the cage. What a little pixy . I'm glad you had at least the little time you did to spend with such a spunky little soul.
