I also have those two in my bookmarks, but found the .org to be the most organized and helpful when I obtained my little guys.
I often ask myself, how many gerbils are too many - right now, I have 21 and I know the breeding pair is pregnant again, LOL. Her pups will be pulled from her in two more weeks, which means two more cages. I think once school starts, I'll get rid of a few more pairs. At first, I didn't have any problems getting rid of them, but then when school let out - it was a different story. Probably because so many people are vacationing, etc... so by the end of August, I have about three pairs right now that can go. (All same sex) Unfortunately, for my daughter, if I have any problems getting rid of them, her breeding pair will be pulled apart and put in with their pups. At one time, I had almost 40 gerbils in here!!! I have no problem with that, I love them and spoil them all, but I think I'd like to keep it around 20, LOL.

WOW. 40 Gerbils?!! And I thought I had my hands full with four! Trouble is, they all used to have their play time together and now that I`ve had to split them into pairs, they have their floor space play time seperately! So half an hour for Dibble and Grub, then they go back to their tank and then Barney and Bertie get out to run riot! They get the run of the bedroom and top hallway, which is very safe for them. I don`t know how safe all the accessories lying around are though. They`ve already mangled a small spider and a moth! They have nibble marks everywhere! I love these little guys. I hope I can have a few degus in the future and will use my time doing as much research on degus as I can, but I will always have mongolian gerbils because they are just great little pets. x

I definitely agree with you there (always having gerbils). I love watching them and playing with them. I have one pair that absolutely will not let me hand tame them whatsoever. They're mean as heck and I am forever getting bit. I've tried everything, but won't give up either. They'll take pumpkin seeds from me, but won't let me take them from their tank. One of them is about a year old and the other is 5 months old. Otherwise, we take the gerbils to the stairs. Oh it's so funny! They will run up and down those stairs and it's so cute. I'm always afraid of one getting past me however and that would be dangerous since I have a saved feral cat here who thinks those gerbils should NOT be a part of this household. (The other two cats could care less) Anyhow, the pups, I take them to the bathtub to play with them because they're just too fast and I'm afraid they'll get loose - a disaster! The degus? LOL, those play on my bed, on me, on my daughter, and anywhere else they can get. I need to get them a play pen to stay safe in because they will chew, they don't care if it means getting fried. Another thing about degus - they don't have fear, so going up to the bars and saying hi to the cats means nothing to them. One of my cats, she's afraid of them, but the other two? Oh no! My oldest boy cat steals their toys (which are mostly cat toys anyhow) and the other one tries to steal the degus as he doesn't think they belong here either, LOL.
