Patches died in my hands holding him in a towel just about 20 minutes ago. I'm glad I was there with him to pet him and comfort him while he quietly and peacefully passed away. I'm extremely sad but relieved that his suffering has ended. The question is now, should I get a couple pups for Bubs because I know he's going to be lonely soon. I don't think he knows yet, but he will realize soon I'm sure. Should I wait a few weeks before introducing a new gerbil? This is new to me, and I've read about the split cage method, but don't know much beyond that. Bubs is about a year and 9 months old, so is it OK to get another gerbil his age or would it be better to introduce 2 pups? Or is he going to be fine on his own for awhile?

Really sorry to hear about your Patches. Poor little guy. As for Bubs, you can introduce another gerbil (s) whenever you like, but there's no rush. Leave it until you are ready and more importantly you have found the right gerbil to be his friend (or if you want two pups, you will need to find some very young ones, which may take some planning).
I personally tend to introduce just one pup as I am suspicious of trio dynamics, but that's my personal preference. Bubs could live for another two years yet (if you're lucky) so make sure you have room for three adult male gerbils if you do decide to get two pups.
Sorry again for your loss.

Thanks, yeah it's been a downer of a week, but I think we may have found Bubs a potential cage mate. Going to make a proper split for the terrarium on Saturday, Bubs is looking pretty sad when I come home from work, I miss seeing them cuddling together in the hollowed out coconut, they were adorable together, I hope he's going to be able to warm up to another cage mate.
