Instead of having to buy the thick Chewtubes at a store, I use wrapping paper tubes; I found a brand that uses really hard cardboard instead of paper roll-up cardboard; they last for days!!

I have thick cardboard tubes (used for posters etc) cut up, glued together with tape and that is the 'lift' to come out to play onto the sofa from the 'Gerbil room' On the sofa I have a big plastic box from Wilkinson, put cardboard boxes in with cut out holes on them, a bowl with sand in it and bits and bobs of cardboard. Korny loves coming out for play via the 'lift', he lands on the back of the sofa, from there he jumps into the plastic box, runs through the boxes, has a bath, jumps back out, runs to the bookshelf, sits there for a bit, runs back home via the lift and so on. Meanwhile I sit there and having fun too Today i found '30 peat pots' in poundland, so I bought 2, it is just cardboard cups but as i am struggling for chews it is gonna be a cheap toy!

Personally, I do not put Sand/Dust baths in my tank, I find it overly messy. I keep a "Bath" tank filled with Bath sand, plus extra dishes in their play pens. This way it your tanks don't get covered in it, the Batah lasts much longer (this stuffs not cheap), and the sand can be sifted of any "leavings" and reused again. hum good idea. I got a spare tank not doing anything at the moment. Would be ideal as a sand bath. Off to spend more xmas money on the gerbils now lol i definantley agree with kristy...but the sand bath is dfinantley not healthy. if the little guys want a bath give them a bath w/ saop and water.....SAND AND DUST BATHS ARE UNHEALTHY Edited Due to huge use of smileys. We love them but too many can be over bearing .

Kayjay, please check your facts before posting. Gerbils come from arid and desert environments, where there is very little water. They have evolved to bathe in sand, not water. This information is available in many places.

I use Flexi-tubes that are used for tumble dryers for out-of-cage play.

If you go to the bird toy section of the pet store, you will find TONS of suitable toys for gerbils that they will love! Most of them they'll have fun destroying, but they can climb the ladders and build nests in the nest boxes, or destroy the pre-made nest woven balls! Also, as said before, the reptile section is great. And now that you own gerbils everybody, you are bound to stop at every single garage sale and look around a bit, maybe spend a couple bucks on them! hope I helped!

I use carpet tubes, you know, when you get a new carpet it has a huge tube inside of it, well i got one recently, chopped it into 4 smaller tubes so they will fit in the tank and my girlie loves them, they last for ages as they are soo thick

Ha ha ha! They certainly do! I keep changing the shape and they get very excited, it is like a new tunnel for them straight from the last one ;D The best is when I hold the hose (Or whatever it is called) and they run through it like on a 'grass bridge'. You should see their faces! You can just read the excitement from their body language
