I am sorry I forgot to tell you all about this....there's been alot on my mind lately, (mid-term exams) There is nothing I am able to change about this, because we have booked an appointment for tomorrow. As many people know probably, Paws, my very first gerbil EVER, died on the weekend, leaving his brother Sterling alone. Sterling has always been agressive and territorial. Our veterinarian breeds gerbils, and knows quite alot about them. We went to her on Monday, and told her about Sterli's situation, and she said that now he is alone, he will need to be handled alot more. This is almost impossible without losing a few fingers. Soooo...after thinking for a while, she said we should try neutering him, then maybe introducing him to another gerbil so he will be less territorial, or just less agressive with us. He is being neutered tomorrow, and I am really hoping that he will do well under anesthetic, because she said there was a small chance he wouldn't ever wake, depending on the condition of his organs and such... but I decided it would be better for him than never being handled or being mateless for a gerbil eternity. What would you suggest doing for when he comes back? SHould I make his cage relaxing, or will he quickly recover? Will he be in pain? I don't know whether I should remove his new wheel...HELPPPPPPPP HAYLEY

Well when Oz had his op at sixteen days old he pulled through, so Im pretty sure Sterling will pull through He may be a little drowsy when he comes out, so just keep him warm in his bed, offer him sunflowers, and keep him quiet for a bit. Oz seemed to wake up properly a day later He should be fine Hayley, but be prepared that things *may* go wrong. In that case, just remember he would be reunited with Paws Good luck to you and Sterling

Thanks for the advice, whitmoregirl. I didn't know one of the pups had and operation...what for? Well, like you said, he would be re-united with his brother, who he obviously misses alot.

Ozzy had a deep cut just on the inside of one of his forelegs - he had to have stitches in it. Good luck Hayley

Interesting theory. Please do keep us informed, although regrettably most agressive gerbils are female so that solution wouldn't work!! Good luck for the op..there is always a risk with anaesthetic but these days it is greatly reduced. Therefore I send you both loads of good wishes.

At oen of the clinics we worked at we did alot of surgeries on Rats, Spays, tumor removals etc. Every Rat recovered. And if your vet has good knowledge with these little guys, I belive for him to be in good hands From what i have seen in pictures of others who have had their male gerbil Neutered, they end up at first with large open sores. Make sure his bedding isn't something that can agitate the wounds. Good Luck!

Thanks! Yeah, I've noticed that people say females are more aggressive, my three are friendly as ever, and Sterling is better, but very VERY territorial. The vet has done this to her gerbils.
So, I guess I should remove the corncob, and only have sand and hemp?

Ahh! He's back... and VERY VERY tired. The fur on his back looks very...dishevelled. Lol. But he soon will be up to his old tricks again, I'm sure!

Six hours after, he is jumping around the tank, being a happy, goofy gerbil. I'm glad to see him this playful after the op!

Not to be too nosey & if I am asking to personal a question just say so... But how much did it cost? I have been pobdering maybe having one of my males fixed so he can stay with his woman forever. she is pregnant with her 3rd litter & I want to stop breeding these 2, but they are SO cute & cuddley together I hate to separate them...

So, I guess I should remove the corncob, and only have sand and hemp? I wouldn't use sand untill he was healed up. You don't want the small bits to get into the wounds and irritate them, or infect them. Stick to the hemp and paper towel while he heals. Glad to hear all went well! Keep us posted on his recovery.

In was (in US dollars) about 40$. That's a rough translation from a different currency. ALso, I just want to say, my vet stitched up the wound, but I don't know whether I'll need them removed a a few weeks, never thought to ask!

check but they usually use dissolving stitches that fall out after a while.
