My mum and I used to plastic down the windows every year in our old rental house. The windows and the seals were done for, and the owner was a cheap skate. It helps more than one might think!
Mostly cardboard.... I guess. It's pretty warm. Plus, My roomate and I had just recently moved in, so all the packing boxes (minus the chunks with packing tape) went to gerbils! And cat food! Actually, I think that my gerbils fave part of their home mixed food, is the Kaytee Exact pieces. It's that colorful stuff that looks like kibble. They pack around chunks of it! LOL it's funny to see!

Thanks everyone for the great ideas! I tried towels over the tank lids last night and it seemed to help a whole lot. I covered all the lid except for 2 or 3 inches. I'm just going to leave them on there for the day time too so they can conserve some warmth. I also left some lamps on for heat but I'll get a heating pad instead. I think the bright light all day may confuse them. Our house stays around 60 - 65 degrees at night, and since we have un even heating, the "gerbil's room" tends to stay on the cooler side. Anything to keep them all happy! (by the way, I have two tshirts and 1 pair of dress pants that have been chewed on by on of my gerbils! she loves material! nice dress pants with a hole! yes, i let them run around my lap...)
