It sounds like the one is just to dominent, and telling buddy i'm the boss. Since you've allready had the fight, and this missing fur is happening again, I would set up a permenent split cage for them. That way they have one anothers company, and can still sniff and talk to one another, but no fighting. It just sounds to me things are not going to get any better between them

I'm in the same boat. My 3 boys de-clanned, and I've been trying to get them abck together, but I can see that there still is a dominance struggle with the three, so I fi do put them together, i'm affriad what might happen I have all 3 split now, but am going to be building 2 split tanks for them, and a loner female I have. This way they all still have company, but no one gets hurt (Heck, I've heard after 6 months or so some peoples gerbils bond and can be put together again )

Glad to know I'm not alone with this problem. I've split these two before in the past cuz of Timmy's over dominance and things seemed to work out until this past month.
I guess I will hafta be creative when it comes to splitting their tank.
Speaking of creative, I had to go and buy a metal dyer hose to use on Billy and Bobby's tank to connect their two tanks together because Billy kept chewing on the plastic connector piece and would escape. I haven't connected it yet, though. Should be interesting, though.........

barbering is something that's tough to stop in gerbils. you could try a dab of bitter apple on his fur where its being ovrly groomed, but that could also lead to him not wanting to groom himself at all and subsequent poor hygine. Sorry I don't have any better suggestions!

I agree with Andrea. You've have a good bit of trouble and a couple of fights between Timmy and Buddy, haven't you? I understand about not being able to get new friends for both boys. Andrea's suggestion of a permanent split tank for them might be a good compromise. Unfortunately, no one can watch their gerbils 24 hours a day. It would be a shame to separate them completely, but I'd be afraid of something really bad happening eventually if you leave them together. They don't seem to be very compatible. RW

Well guys, I took Andrea's suggestion. I was already thinkin that was something I might have to do, but was dreading it. :-/Tonight only confirmed it-once I finished posting here, I went upstairs to check on them. Sure enough, Timmy beat up Buddy again. We just now finished working on their tanks....it took all night. Plus I had to go to Wal-Mart to pick up another 10 gallon tank. My hubby had a brilliant idea-yes to split tank them. We had to swap out tanks though with Peaches cuz Buddy and Timmy were living in a 20 gallon high. Not much room in there for splitting up the tank. And Peaches lives alone in a 20 gallon long connected to a 10 gallon. At any rate, the rest of my hubby's idea was to give each of them a playground and then the bottom tank wouldn't be so crowded with their stuff. As for Buddy, we cleaned him up and he seems fine. Here is a piccy of what their tanks now look like- Of course, I had gone to Wal-Mart twice tonight. I was gonna see if they had any 20 gallon longs. But as I got there, it dawned on me to just swap tanks with Peaches. Then when I got back home, my hubby told me his idea about having both of them have a playground so back to Wal-Mart I went. Now I'm tired. Whew! Thanks you guys for your help and support!!

Adding smaller tanks on top of the 20L so your boys have more room is a great idea, cinny! Sorry Buddy and Timmy got into it again. I definitely think separating them was the way to go. I hope Buddy's battle wounds heal quickly! RW

Hi Ashley and RW! Yeah, it was a koola idea to add another tank for each of them. I do feel alot better about doing it like that. Now their bottom tank isn't as crowded and they have room to move around and still be able to smell and talk to each other with the divider. As of this morning, Buddy seems to be alright. I've put some vitamins in his water and been cleaning his wounds up with peroxide. I might hafta to do to my clan of three if they get into it again.

LOL Andrea! Yeah, if my hubby didn't help me, this whole thing would have taken me all night! He's pretty good about helping me with stuff like that. My observation of Buddy and Timmy today-they seem to be doing alright apart and enjoying their playground. I added a small box and a toilet paper roll for the bottom tank since they are both avid carboard chewers. ;D In my opinion, Buddy is a real trooper. He didn't even fight back when Timmy was beating him up this time.

In my opinion, Buddy is a real trooper. He didn't even fight back when Timmy was beating him up this time. I had the same thing with 2 girls, Shelby & Maserati. Shelby beat the ever loving outta poor Mazi, and Mazi never fought back, just took the abuse! I don't get it? I don't think it could have been a Dominance thing with them since it's obviouse Shelby won. Glad to hear things are working out now
