Hey Guys, I got home from shopping a minute ago and wnet straight to my bedroom to check my gerbils. I have several tanks so I had a look around to see if everyone was O.K. I got to a tank of three of my little gerbils and one of them was huddled in a small corner completely still. I paniced and thought she was dead. I opened the cages and picked Areo up. She was still alive but eyes shut and moving very slowly, not at all bouncy like normal. I had checked them before I went shopping and they were fine running about. They have plenty of food and water. At the moment she is in one of my big ski socks getting warm. I'm not sure what it is and the other two in the tank are fine. Please please help I think I have tried everything all I can do is wait. I've tried giving her food on her own but she will pick it up but not eat it. She will however drink if I help but only a few drips so far. She is acting a bit like a pup. But far slower. I'm not sure what else to say, please help. Thanks in advance, Tilly x

I've now put her back in the tank with her buddies and they both, the two of them, in turn licked for a couple of minutes under her mouth. She is still wrapped in the ski sock getting warm. HELP Tilly x

you are doing the right thing by keeping her warm, just try to keep her warm and keep a real close eye her, if you have a heat mat use that. be very quiet around her and no sudden movements, i'd just keep holding her on your lap, wrapped in the ski sock i think she may have had a seizure or a stroke, from the symptoms, but i'm not sure i once had a gerbil who had a seizure, they go very weak, hobble around slowly and jerkily and go cold, but are still alive. however, they are fine like an hour before, running around, digging and chewing? right? you could try and book a vets appointment, but i would think that this would only stress her out at this point good luck, i've got to go now to have my dinner now (sorry!), i really hope she gets better for you!!!

Are her teeth ok? Is her mouth wet? Is there any cuts, or could she have fitted?

How old is she?
I had a 3 year old gerbil have a stroke on me, I to thought she had died, untill I opened the lid and she weaky looked up at me before letting her head fall back down. Keeping her warm and getting fluids into her is important. Try some apple sauce (no sugar), and then maybe some cat food. Mine pulled out of it after a day or so, though she was paralized down the left side of her body.
Good luck with her, and keep us updated!

Hey Guys, Thanks for the replies, you've helped alot. She is about the same I can't tell yet if she is getting better. I have wrapped her up in the ski sock and popped her in a little cardboard box so as she keeps warm. Here are a few answers to questions- Ashgerbil- thanks for your support, shes ok. I think that your prediction about the stroke/seizere thing sounds corredct but I can't be sure. Whitmoregirl- She does have a few cuts in her mouth. I think by the gums on her lower set of teeth. They seem to bleed a bit when I check her mouth. There is no sign of anything on her body cut or scratches, but she is hunched up and I can feel her spine. AndreaS15- She is around 8/9/10 months old. I have not had that long or any of her cage mates. What do you think, I'm still not quite sure, but then I'm cluess when it comes to this as it has never happened to me before. Thanks again, Tilly x

I thought Jason was dead... I filled some ziploc baggies with hot tap water, and put some paper towles down on them and he was cuddled in the middle. how warm is the room?? I figured out that Jason was just sensitive to the temp, and all my other gerbils were fine, but he couldn't handle it.

Hi Tilly .. Sorry to hear of the little one. When I read your last post it sounds like there might be something wrong with her teeth. Check to see if they haven't grown too long. They can actually over grow right into the lower part of their mouths. Keep us updated.

What do they live in (Tank/Cage)? If there are cuts around her mouth I would be affriad she chewed on soemthing and it's hurt her, maybe given her an infection? It sounds like the best palce for her may be a viset to the Vet. Being she is still quite young, the bleeding cuts around her mouth, it just don't sound like a stroke 100%.
I would take her to a vet and get a proferssional opinion.

I'm just guessing here, because I've never dealt with a gerbil seizure before, but... ...I know that when a human haa a seizure, it is very common to bite the tongue or the inside of the mouth, sometimes very hard. Is it possible that she managed to scrape the inside of her mouth with her incisors? I don't know where the cuts/ scrapes are located. Hope she's doing better

Hey Guys, It's been a very tiering night. We put her back in her cage with her mates in lots and lots of tissue. This was about 10ish. Me and my mum then took turns evry couple of hours to check that she was O.K. Every time I checked her she looked very still almost dead but when I touched her she moved a little. She went through the night for around 09-10 hours so pretty good. The room temp. is about 60 faran. But I'm not totally sure not very good at that kinda stuff. I'd say it is pretty normal. They live in a tank because, as I posted to check, their tank brke, and we still haven't got their tank delivered yet. I turned her onto her back this morning and gave her some water, which she took 1 drip of. I then put her on a plate of food. Thats when she started to move alot, scrabbling around but not picking anything up. She finally decied to walk off the plate and onto the table, so I wrapped her back up and put in the cage again. She didn't stay still for long though she was moving all around the cage into boxes in nests, ect. She still has her eyes shut and, from what I saw when she was scrabbling about she can't move her front left leg properly. Anyway thats the lastest, sorry if I went on, I'm still clueless on what it is???Thanks again for your support, Tilly x

that's what sooty was like! it was like she was trying to seperate herself away from everyone, just trying to run away in really jerky movements, she looked almost drunk because she couldn't really coordinate her back legs and front legs well at all and she fell over sometimes but mebbe Areo had a stroke then? seeing as she can't move her front leg, mebbe it's got paralysed or something anyways, i'm no expert so you should probably get Areo to the vets and see what he/she says
