Hello, I've tried to find some resources about whether moss is an okay substance for gerbils. Can't find any info. I really want to include it as a fun texture in a jungle gym I want to build. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge on the subject.

It depends on what type of moss you're talking about. Sphagnum moss, which is commonly sold in pet stores for reptiles, is safe for hamsters (and I would assume gerbils), as long as you don't re-hydrate it and make it all wet. Wild moss that you collect from outside, however, is likely not safe as it usually contains dirt, mold, insects, and who knows what else. Also, wild moss poses a toxicity risk if ingested. So, in conclusion, dry sphagnum moss would be a nice substrate to use for a removable jungle gym area, but not as a regular substrate. I would only use the moss under supervision to make sure they're not eating it.
