Hello, I have a very dark colored gerbil, it's a Burmese or Siamese gerbil and normally gerbils with darker colors dont have red eyes, could red eyes be a sign of poor eyesight or illness? The gerbil also doesnt seem to notice where the floor ends, as he falls off of things very easily like he didnt know there was going to be no floor there. But he scatters and runs away when something moves. Should I take him to a vet?

no, red eyes are an illness. gerbils can have poor eyesight regardless of the color.

Hey there! I suppose I need you to define what you mean by "red eyes". Are you talking about the actual color of their eyes? Or that their eyes are "red" like when our eyes are irritated, weepy, or swollen?
Gerbils have black, red, pink, and black eyes that have a wine-ish red hued tint to them when a light shines in them, colored eyes.
But if you are referring to noticing a brownish, like dried blood, colored mucus around their eyes or the eyes look irritated or swollen, then this could be a sign of illness or allergies.
Gerbils eye sight, regardless what color, is less than average at best. They rely more on their high sense of smell and hearing. Red or pink eyes have an even less eyesight than average and have a tendency to sway a bit to see better or can misjudge depth perception.
So if you can, please clarify what you are referring to so we can better assist you. Thanks!

Burmese and Siamese gerbils only have dark eyes, but if they are actually CP and LCP Slates (which look very similar) then they will have a red shine to their dark eyes (but you need to look under certain lights to see it).
However if they actually have fully red eyes - look at images of Argente or Lilac gerbils online - then this could be a new gene (for example rat have a gene for red-eyed Siamese) or a genetic issue - a picture would help for sure.
Blind gerbils are infact less likely to fall off of things or scatter and run away when something moves as they know they have limitations. However a partially sighted gerbil may well exhibit those characteristics. There could also be other illness that could affect his character and balance, such as inner ear conditions or nerve-related illnesses like infections etc.
Has he always had these red eyes and quirky characteristics or have they developed recently?

betty All colorpoints and light colorpoints have wine eyes, in addition to the uw[d]uw[d] colors and dd colors. Dilute Colorpoints have lighter, nearly ruby eyes.
