Hey guys. Just wondering if anyone ever experienced their gerbil mum whom gave birth to a dead pup? Asking because one of my gerbil mom gave birth today. When i checked at 1pm, there was only 1 pup, her tummy looked flat, i thought she only had 1 pup or maybe another 1 or 2 will come after awhile. When i checked back at 3/4pm, i noticed the mom carrying a dead pup from one corner to the corner with her other pup the pup was not pink but pale and already dead - no signs of breathing, squeaking or movements. As of now seems like there’s only 2 pups born (of which 1 is dead). Is there any chance of a pup being born dead? Anyone experienced this? Should i remove the pup immediately? Seems like the mom is not accepting the death and she’s like, keeping it warm still.

Hey there! Stillbirths do happen from time to time. A pup died in the womb for whatever reason and it gets birthed already dead. Where we don't know the reasons, this can just happen.
I would remove the passed away pups from the tank and properly dispose of them for her.
Hope this helps!

Hey betty, sorry been awhile since i visited this forum. Thank you for checking in again in June!!! Unfortunately the last pup didn’t survive as well. I was guessing that either the pups didn’t grow well in the womb, or it could be that the mom (named Tofu) was not ready to takecare of them. There weren’t any litters soon after that as well... However on 31 July, Tofu had her 2nd litter. 3 pups this time round. Seems like she knows what to do as a mom right now. 8 days old now, and the pups are looking well. Still monitoring and I hope this litter grows up well!!!
