Sorry to keep posting unfortunate stories, but... investigations.peta.org/animals-gassed-frozen-petco-petsmart/Among other horrible details: The animals—thousands of whom had already been subjected to a grueling overseas trip in shipping crates—were confined to crowded bins or cages in Holmes Farm’s filthy, windowless warehouses. The buildings reeked of urine and feces, and one building’s floor was spattered with blood where helpless prey animals had apparently been attacked by cats, who were allowed to roam freely throughout the facility, regularly jumping in and out of the bins. One hamster who had been attacked by a cat was just left to flail and die on the floor. PETA’s eyewitness saw hamsters running in constant circles, which can be a sign of severe stress or illness. Gerbils frantically scratched at bins in which each animal had just 6 square inches of floor space. Some rabbits had less than 1 square foot of “living” space. A manager grabbed chinchillas by their sensitive tails and tossed hamsters a few feet from one bin to another. Animals were commonly forced to drink from filthy, contaminated water bowls or denied water altogether. PETA’s eyewitness discovered hundreds of mice without water, who then drank in a frenzy after the witness provided them with some.

Hey there!
Yes, its extraordinarily sad and upsetting. Small animals just don't have the same laws protecting them that large pets, like cats and dogs do, and even THEN..there are still horror stories.
There's so much "puppy -milling" from billions of people looking for animals for pets, and believe it or not, other reasons, that its almost impossible for regular, proper regulation and inspections by government agencies on all these places.
What's even more sad, is that people who want to get a pet for their loving home, literally, don't have any other recourse but to purchase from these places, as they are their only option. Reputable breeders are either too far away or they don't know there is one to even look for one. Driving an hour or more away just isn't logical when they can run to the pet store 20 mins away for a pet. And many times, shelters and rescues don't have small animals very often.
And sadly, sometimes even us here on this form have purchased from these places, either for pets or supplies, for one reason or another. Even I have found a particular rare color of gerbil to find in my location once in a while at Petsmart and purchased the animal to take home.
I want to tell myself that what I am doing is saving this furry cutie from the conditions it came from, and where that is true, the double edge sword is your money for that purchase goes right back to helping these horrid places continue their terrible practices. To them, an animal purchased is an animal in demand.
It's just a very heart-rending situation. And these animal breeding facilities could very well clean up their act and care for their animals, but it cuts into their profits and why should they?
I'd like to toss those SOB's into a tiny cage and let them sit in their own filth and get pus laden infections before tossing THEM into the freezer to claw and scream before their death to see how THEY like it.

I wish that this wasn't true, but my gerbils are PetSmart gerbils. The thing is, I can't find anything other than these pet stores in my area.

Don't beat yourself up about it katsy, I'm in the same situation. There are literally no other options for me. Which is terrible, because I live so near an AGS registered breeder who cannot be contacted because of a website malfunction. But, when forced to purchase animals from a pet store, I think it's a good idea to travel around to different stores and try to choose the one which takes the best care of its animals. For example, correct diet, no overcrowding, ample space, etc. Care like this is a rare thing to find in a pet store, but at least you can support the one that takes better care of its animals than the others.

Thank you. It is nice to know that I am not the only one who struggles with finding a humane place to get gerbils. I will check out more pet shops in my area.
