Hello! When I got home today I noticed there was red around one of my gerbil's eyes. I tried to look up what it might be and I saw that it could be because of stress? Her older sister passed Sunday, so it could be possible, but I don't know for sure. Does anyone have any ideas? Image below! Thanks in advance.

It's porphyrin, usually caused by stress, illness or some kind of irritation. One of my gerbils had this after her sister died too. If it doesn't reoccur after she washes it off, and she seems well otherwise, it's probably nothing to worry about.

Just to add, I read in a few places that wood shavings can cause eye irritation too, unlike paper based beddings.

what type of bedding is she on? it could be stress as well, if it gets worse, i'd put her on paper towels for afew days, changing them daily with some cardboard underneath. My Saphie lost her sister last month and was depressed but has come around with extra attention from me, it takes time for them to adjust being alone.

As LilyandDaisy says, it's poryphorin ie the compound in their tears and mucous so it's not blood, so don't worry too much. She may have scratched it or irritated with a wood chip.
