I have just now noticed tonight that my 3 month old gerbil has had these weird shoots of energy- he will run in a circle and will scratch his ear. Im worried for an ear infection, but I literally have just noticed this tonight and I’m super worried. Maybe he’s just being playful? After running in a circle he runs up to his brothers and licks their mouths and tries to play with them. Any help is appreciated.

He may just be a very energetic gerbil! Mine will run around their tank like crazy then suddenly stop and do something else If you're concerned, however, that this could be a neurological issue, then I'd keep an eye on him and maybe record the behavior and post it on here? I wouldn't be too worried, though Scratching his ear doesn't always mean an ear infection- it could simply be itchy! Unless, of course, he does it excessively and pairs it with shaking his head and/or rubbing his ear on things to scratch it. Then I might be worried about an infection.

Alright thanks. I definitely feel better now. I just kinda panicked because of what I’ve read, and I had only seen him do it a couple of times and then he seemed to stop. I think he was just having a little frenzy. He’s a good boy and the runt and he’s catching up to his brothers in size though! I’ll record on here if I see anymore strange behavior. Thanks!!

Hi. The boys are doing well and I haven’t seen anymore running on circle behavior. They are a bit puffy, but they are young and just growing into their adult fur. Is this something I should be worried about? When I pick them up they smooth out and their not always puffed up, but sometimes

They do puff out their fur sometimes. Mine do when it's cold, so perhaps it helps them keep warm. I'm sure it's normal as long as they are well otherwise (gerbils also puff out their fur when they are ill).
