the school i go to is a farm school, and is absolutely riddled with ladybugs! out of curiosity, would my gerbils be able to eat ladybugs without getting ill? if they can eat them, is it a good treat?

Apparently they aren't poisonous to humans, cats or dogs (not sure about gerbils, but personally I wouldn't risk it). They do taste horrible though, so probably not a good treat.

Ladybugs ARE poisonous, but they aren't poisonous enough to affect larger animals like humans, dogs, or cats unless you eat a large quantity of them (ew). They're poisonous to smaller animals such as birds, lizards, or mice, though, so you probably shouldn't feed them to your gerbils. They would likely get sick from it.

It's best not to give insects from outside to your gerbils anyway. They may be carrying bacteria or have been sprayed with insecticides.
You can buy live crickets, locusts or mealworms from pet shops. Some gerbils love hunting them down, others aren't interested.

Just be sure to remove live bugs from the pet store if your gerbils don't eat them
