Just curious if anyone knows whether there is a genetic predisposition to ear infections? In the past I've had several gerbils (maybe 10 or more?) that have never been bothered by them but this year I've had 2 brothers from the same litter that came down with ear infections. Is this a coincidence, genetics or just bad luck?

I'm not sure if ear infection predisposition can be genetic. Hopefully someone better with genetics can help you out with that. However, I DO know that ear infections could mean an underlying issue, such as tumors in the brain or ear, and these underlying issues could be genetic.

There was a study that identified a gene in humans linked to an increased risk of ear infections, and they found an analogous gene in mice. I'm sure it's possible for there to be a genetic predisposition in gerbils as well. Equally it could have been something environmental.
