is it ok to give gerbils peanut butter? I have one which is really natural- no additional ingredients and definitely not sugar, salt and palm oil. I know gerbils like nuts and seeds but would it be ok to give them peanut butter or is it too fatty?

Yes! All-natural sounds great, too. Just a small bit on a stick or a biscuit makes Jett super happy Sometimes if you're struggling with hand taming, it helps to put some peanut butter on your fingers and let them lick it off (but it's pretty terrifying for me when I can feel his little teeth... )

A little update: I "tried" to give pippin some butter- she took one sniff, then another, then gave up any interest whatsoever... Oh well, maybe I'll try again one day! 😁

My gerbils are funny about new foods. They won't usually try them until I have offered them at least a few times. When I showed them dried mealworms for the first time they wouldn't go near them, now they love them. Most gerbils love peanut butter, so I would offer it a couple more times at least.

Good luck with next time! Jett is a curious little gerbil... he’ll eat almost anything I put under his nose and at least give it a few nibbles before deciding wether or not he wants to devour it. He also requires a pallet change in the middle of his meal (so if he’s eating a blueberry, he’ll eat half of it and then drop it until I give him a pea- then he’ll finish the blueberry. Sometimes, if I don’t have a pea ready, he waits for a few minutes for me to heat up some peas and give it to him before he eats the rest of the blueberry.). He has very refined taste... Another thing Jett loves to death that your gerbils could try, if they haven’t already, is cheese. Just like peanut butter, they should only have a small amount and only about once a week. But it’s definitely worth a try! Jett enjoys a cheddar cheese shred melted on his peas or on its own!

I give my gerbils peanut butter and almond butter all the time! My boy Squiggy doesn't seem to like any treats except peanut butter so it is a good way for him to smell me and associate my scent with something good. It is so cute to feel their little tongues lick it right off my finger:)
